Marcus Ferguson Yet another brilliant album from one of my all-time favourite bands. Fell in love with these guys on first listen and have been blown away by every release since and Queen City is no exception.

The whole album is excellent, but for mine, the stand out tracks are "Pulled from the Wreckage" and "Signs Were Everywhere".

Best of all, the name implies a Volume Two will be released at some point! Favorite track: Pulled from the Wreckage.

Great fossilized hand I'm here For the last migration From some godless land In a failed revelation I'll be waiting in the disappearing cottonwood And now the sediment covers me And I'm the first born And now the city light colours me And I'm the first born Pulled from the wreckage So put your wings on my shoulders And let's dance to the dawn On brick and tangled steel To the cormorant's song These fragments I have shored up against my ruin So said The Wasteland And now the sediment covers me And I'm the first born And now the city light colours me And I'm the first born Pulled from the wreckage Wait here, the great cull draws near Take to the wind Black winged storm Above the streets Surround the tower Rising up, pulled from the wreckage

The Good Blood (free) 04:00
I read your note at the bend in Sterling Road You found a way out and let the city know The sun was sinking, the shadows growing tall And now your history is peeling off the walls Oh child, claimed by the city Wrenched from the jaws of love I'm not sure I know who you've been I'm not the one you're looking for But you can rest your fists in my heart for a while You can let the bad blood out And let the good blood in Good-bye New York, your heart was never mine You let us love you but you can't remember why I need a light that shines through the dusken hue I need a light that shines away from me to you Oh child, claimed by the sea Raised in the wakes and floods I'm not sure I know who I've been I'm not the one you're looking for But you can rest your fists in my heart for a while You can let the bad blood out And let the good blood in Oh child, claimed by the city

This time I finally see I'm no match for you I couldn't push your heart away from me Like you told me to Beneath the streets I wandered In a universal blue Between the black wind of the subway screaming by I thought of you The signs were everywhere But we're not ones for cautious steps honey The signs were everywhere The day you left I rode the 504 To the end of the line Down in the valley with its mouth now muzzled tight Where you put your lips to mine Great iron arches came striding overhead In the poet's dream This town will change you in a thousand different ways And you won't feel a thing But maybe in the deep dark valleys of your heart You might have heard her sing The signs are everywhere So why the cautious steps honey The signs are everywhere This time I finally see I'm no match for you

You took my hand And led me out of the midway after dark Fireworks like a splintered sunrise And from the arches we saw the Julia B Go down in a blaze of fire Lifting the hearts of the disenfranchised I'll be waiting in the dappled light Down in the courtyard with my heart held tight Should have learned by now About the ruinous ways of love It should have hurt by now From the ruinous ways of love But I sure miss you We could steal the boat with the painted oars And float through the oily night Live and die beyond the battered sea wall But we are children of the city now No less than the walls we're in So close the gates and let the great preservation begin I'll be waiting in the dappled light Down in the courtyard with my heart held tight Should have learned by now About the ruinous ways of love It should have hurt by now From the ruinous ways of love But I sure miss you

The Angelus 04:42
Pose for the camera I'll need you in a century's time When you're ghosts of the ward Floating through our new squalid confines We were six to a room Carried here when the old world was burning They say hard work can save you But it can break you just the same Or so we're learning Can't help the feeling that I know you somehow A painting of The Angelus Hangs like a mirror in the hall She died of consumption Burn the sheets and the arabesque walls Can't help the feeling that I know you somehow One hundred years gone, no trace of you now But I can't help the feeling that I owe you somehow

Below the monolith I Spoke as a child Through a glass darkly Kill the lights and close the doors Along the forty-second floor Through a glass darkly The city it dreams An infinite view Reflecting me, reflecting you Came in a dream Black-bronze hue Reflecting me, reflecting you By the time you opened your eyes She was not in sight Retreating from the windows into fluorescent light She was not in sight After the third great fire We'll build a bridge across the sky Through a glass darkly The city it dreams An infinite view Perfecting me, perfecting you What might have been Black-bronze hue Reflecting me, reflecting you By the time you opened your eyes She was not in sight Retreating from the windows into fluorescent light She was not in sight It's been a hard winter I learned a deep hunger My body's a dark hollow I wish you'd come back From the cold fluorescent light

1992 05:54
It always starts in the month of May Out of the seeds of love and unrest All make way for the rite of spring In her pigeon-toed pagan dress Twenty one years ago Horseshoes and broken glass Yonge street's in bloom again It all begins near the junction overpass With two shots Don't go, I think I need you To fool me 'cause I'll take the world at your word When we were young, we feel asleep At midnight in the grove of cedar trees Path was paved for the golden age While half a world away the city raged Ninety-nine shades of love Coming down around us now And it feels like and endless summer It all comes back Near the junction overpass With two shots Fool me 'cause I'll take the world at your word

Stepped out on to the platform that morning Two lights in the darkness Said I need something new to make this Old heart old A new kind of blindness Out of the formless black The train emerged to take you You turned your head Looked at me and said This is just the beginning Out where the mission bell rings We found the great bird down in the wreckage

about

The Queen City albums attempt to create a map of songs for Toronto. Arising out of specific sites within the city (Leslie Spit, Prince Edward Viaduct, Toronto Dominion Centre), the lyrical content weaves together history, mythology, and personal reflection into a dream-like cinematic narrative. The title, 'Queen City' refers to one of several monikers that Toronto has gone by since its foundation in the early 19th century. And yet the city shares this title with many other places throughout North America making it general and specific at the same time. The lyrics for the songs operate in much the same way, attempting to capture something very specific (place, texture, atmosphere) and dealing with universal human emotions (love, death, and longing).
